This November SPEAR:LIVE will bring three of the North East’s bands to Uncle Alberts in Middlesbrough for another of their acclaimed free gigs with Toyger, Brilliant Mind and Temporary Sons.
The monthly SPEAR:LIVE showcase gigs, which are supported by Middlesbrough Town Hall and Middlesbrough Council, feature a mix of artists from Teesside and further afield in the region.
Middlesbrough-based five piece Toyger make exciting math-pop influenced by bands such as Foals and have set tongues wagging following their appearance at Generator’s Transmission – the NEw wave event in September despite the band being less than a year old.
BBC 6 Music presenter Tom Robinson was very impressed by Toyger, commenting: “Toyger have set the bar remarkably high, delivering brave, ambitious music with panache.”
Since their first gig in March 2010 Toyger have built a dedicated army of fans including BBC Tees’ Bob Fischer who invited them to perform an acoustic session for his BBC Introducing show.
By contrast Newcastle-based Brilliant Mind have seemingly been around forever, forming from the ashes of New Vinyls, and embarking with a renewed lineup in a refreshed direction which has won approval from Fierce Panda records, who put out ‘Leave Your Friends Behind’ on a compilation EP early in 2010.

They followed this up with the self-released avian ode ‘Our Osprey’, a tale of small town frustration directed at the world of birdwatching tourists.
The lineup is completed by Teessiders Temporary Sons, who put out their first demos in July backed by a statement of intent which shunned typical ambitions for world domination and being the voice of a lost generation in favour of a desire to make music for themselves.
Influenced by musicians including Nick Cave, Kevin Shields and Johnny Marr and poets and writers like Larkin and Camus, Temporary Sons make esoteric, captivating music in the vein of The Fall, their debut at Uncle Alberts should give further insight into their world.
SPEAR:LIVE is accompanied by SPEAR:TALK, a bi-monthly seminar series led by industry professionals at Middlesbrough Town Hall’s Crypt. The next talk will take place on Thursday 25 November, titled ‘Transmission’, the panel, chaired by BBC Tees’ Bob Fischer and featuring Stefan Baumschlager from Last.fm, TV Production Manager Hannah Bedford (Objective Productions) and XFM presenter John Kenedy will discuss the past, present and future of music broadcasting.
SPEAR:LIVE will host its last gig of 2010 at Uncle Alberts on Saturday 18 December with Let’s Buy Happiness, Soviet Disco and Sister Rose.

Don’t get me started on Wheatus though. They were RUDE. To JOHN GIBSON. That’s practically a sin in itself.
They’re also a terrible shitty band riding on the waves of 2-3 catchy tunes they released nigh-on 10 years ago as well.
Middlesbrough’s hugely popular Big Mouth Comedy Club is set for another busy night, with ex-Eastender Eddy Brimson and Irish charmer Andrew Ryan leading the way on Saturday 6 November.
The North-East’s biggest comedy club continues to bring some of the freshest and best comics on the UK and global circuits to packed crowds at the Town Hall Crypt on the first Saturday of each month.
November sees actor, sports presenter and reformed football hooligan (really!) Eddy Brimson hit the stage as one of the most popular headliners on today’s comedy circuit.
What’s known as a ‘geezer,’ and a damn funny one at that, Eddy once starred as the Eastenders’ lout who turned over Frank Butcher’s car lot. You’ll also recognise him from Absolutely Fabulous and Rowan Atkinson police sitcom The Thin Blue Line.
Irish charmer Andrew Ryan is an Ardal O’Hanlon lookalike / soundalike who is currently going down a storm at major comedy clubs all over the country.
Huge Big Mouth favourite Matt Reed is MC, making sure the laughs keep on coming thick and fast all night.
• Big Mouth Comedy Club: Middlesbrough Town Hall Crypt, Sat 6 Nov. With: Eddy Brimson, Andrew Ryan and Matt Reed (MC). Doors: 7.30pm. Show: 8.15pm. Tickets: £12.00. Box Office: 01642 729729.
